Georgia's Fort Mountain State Park

This park is located on Fort Mountain, near Chatsworth, GA. We booked a cabin there on short notice to fill out a week that we couldn't get at Desoto. We ended up with probably the best bargain we ever got, but for just the two of us, it was a lot of wasted space. We were in a 3 bedroom 2 bath cabin that would accomodate 12 folks. It was set up so that you had a suite on one side, with a private bathroom, then on the other side of the great room, two bedrooms that shared a bathroom. Each bedroom had 2 full size beds. The kitchen table would seat twelve, so for once we had room to spread out our stuff AND sit down to eat. It had a huge stone fireplace, and a large deck off of the back. All this for 80 bucks a night! We think the off season rate has gone up to 90 bucks, but if you travel with family or friends, we doubt you could beat a deal like this.

But, there is no restaurant, and, like Black Rock Mountain, you have to come off the mountain and drive a few miles to find one. So, bring stuff to cook. The kitchen was fully equipped, incuding a microwave.

This park's claim to fame is the rock formations that date back to they're not quite sure when. There are nice hiking trails to explore the rocks and to get some scenic views of the valley below, an observation tower to climb (and try to work the Atlanta repeaters, which we did!), and there is a beach on a small lake in season. And, being the radio geeks that we are, we had to drive across a small gorge to the western edge of the ridge proper, where GA Public Television has one of its transmitters located. Its tower shares the skyline with a forest service lookout tower which is, unfortunately, off limits to the public. Still, we got some pictures and marveled at the wind, which was visibly swaying the towers!
