About Us... |
We are a couple of Geeks (and proud of it, man!) that are fascinated with things technical, historic, factual, or just plain interesting. We don't think it is cute to be stupid, in fact, we think it is, well, STOOPID! Pat is a software/embedded systems engineer by trade, currently working (back) in Norcross, GA. After a (too) brief sabbatical, Jan is back into mortgage banking, with a new company. We live in Lawrenceville, Georgia, in metro Atlanta (YUK!), which is the main reason we like to vacation in the boonies! |
As you can tell from the site, we are pro-technology, but not exclusively. We also believe in protecting the environment, and contribute annually to the Nature Conservancy. We believe that with careful planning and consideration, we can enjoy the benefits of advancing technology without trashing the planet. We do occasionally end up at odds with the environmental extremists, especially concerning existing dams, but in the metro Atlanta area we are vehemently opposed to the rampant, uncontrolled development that is still on going. So, put us in the middle most of the time. |
A disclaimer: for the most part we have no financial interests in any of the companies whose stuff we present here, with the exception of a (very) small amount invested in the Dividend Re-Investment Plan of Southern Company, the parent of Georgia Power (operator of the North Georgia Hydro Group). |
About the Photos... |
All photos were taken by us unless otherwise noted. We reserve all rights to the photos, but casual reproduction on personal web pages won't upset us as long as proper acknowledgment is given. In fact, if you have common interests, let us know and we'll put up a link to your site. If you have commercial interest, we would be flattered! Contact us here. Check out the photo arsenal on the tools page. |
About the Site... |
Like the home page sez, this site is for us to share neat stuff with fellow Geeks that find this kind of stuff interesting. We used to host the site ourselves on our trusty Red Hat 6.2 Linux box running Apache Web Server, but now we have moved the site to Pair Networks. Why we did is a long story. The domain names were registered with directnic.com. We are not particularly fond of Bill's Bloatware, but we started page editing on a Windoze 98 box with Hotmetal Pro 6.0. Jan wants to get into real web page development so she will probably stay with Hotmetal unless something better comes along (which we hope is soon, Hotmetal is driving us up the wall!). Pat (the luddite) quickly abandoned the GUI (Godawful User Interface) to use his console editor to manipulate raw HTML. Pat: "You might think the page looks a little spartan, but until somebody really proves to me that a bunch of flashing lights and whirlygigs actually adds to the conveyance of information, simple text and a few JPEG images will do quite nicely, thank you very much! In fact, being a luddite saves a lot of time. I can fire up my editor, correct some typos, save the file, upload it to pair, then point the browser to it and review it, all before HotMetal gets to the point where you can start work!" |
BTW, the editor is TSE32 from Semware. Check it out if you liked Brief and hate GUIs... |
Any browser should work well here, even Bill's, although a text only browser is sort of pointless, since the site is mostly pictures. We suggest |
